Rabia S. Akhtar is a contemporary Pakistani artist known for her richly symbolic paintings that blend surreal imagery with psychological and folkloric undertones.

Drawing inspiration from folklore, natural cycles, and psychological landscapes, Akhtar creates immersive worlds where animals and environments serve as metaphors for tension, transformation, and coexistence.

Working primarily in oil, she constructs dreamlike landscapes filled with animals, dynamic skies, and transitional terrains; spaces where instinct, emotion, and myth intersect. Her compositions often balance whimsy with unease, employing vibrant colours and meticulous detail to explore themes of coexistence, inner tension, transformation, and quiet resistance.

In her work “Crab Rave,” Akhtar portrays a poetic encounter between creatures and their environment. The vibrant hues and symbolic figures suggest a world caught between playfulness and confrontation. This artwork invites open interpretation, allowing the narrative to remain fluid and intuitive rather than fixed.

Akhtar’s work has been exhibited in group shows across South Asia and Europe, establishing her as a distinctive voice in contemporary figurative and surreal painting.
